Jeremy Lin on Coach D'antoni: "I remember I had one game where I had 9 turnovers and we lost. And I got a call from him after the game. He's like, "...I just wanted to call to let you know next game, go ahead and get 20 turnovers...Do not think once about your turnovers or stopping."
Lin would also say, "That's why I played so well. I had this coach that was empowering me, constantly in my ear, telling me to go go go, trust your instincts."
Jeremy Lin said this among other things on his appearance on 'Winging It' which is Vince Carter and Kent Bazemore's podcast. Bazemore agreed with Jeremy's assessment as he also played for D'antoni on the Lakers.

i get what hes saying but it just sounds like terrible advice lol
[–]Trail Blazers irelli 336 points 23 hours ago
It's really not though. He's essentially saying don't change your game because you're having a bad night.
Like if you're Steph or Lillard or someone, don't turn down an open 27 footer because you're 0/5 from 3. That's your shot. Take it.

Mike D'Antoni: the Point Guard Whisperer
[–]11Shareef 20 points 22 hours ago
This is the most Mike D’antoni thing I’ve ever heard.
So, Mike, what’s the gameplan? “Get as much offense in as possible. If you lose the ball, we’ll get it back.”
But shouldn’t I worry about my efficiency? “What’s efficiency?”.
[–]Raptors ColeYote 22 points 21 hours ago
Yeah, you really can't play like you're afraid to fuck up, that's just gonna make you avoid taking chances that you really should.
This applies to other sports as well.
[–]76ers ProcessTruster 33 points 1 day ago
Whatever you do, do it WITH CONFIDENCE!
[–]Supersonics koticgood 52 points 21 hours ago
D'antoni is my favorite coach because of all these stories.
Free flowing run and gun basketball. It'd be one thing if it didn't work, but he's a proven, successful coach in the NBA, coaching players to play the game the way you want to as a kid.
[–]Pacers StevenAmos 5 points 18 hours ago
Ahh yes, that free flowing houston offense where 4 guys pretend to be statues, and the other guy dribbles the ball for 23 seconds before shooting a 3
[–]Sneaky RatFriend 1354 points 23 hours ago*
For Lin, the advice couldn't be more relevant. After Linsanity, he always struggled with confidence. You could see him, through the course of a bad game, shut down and start overthinking shit.
[–]West JM15 426 points 23 hours ago
That's more of the pre-Linsanity through about first year Rocket Lin. Afterwards his real worst year with confidence is with the Lakers and him having no confidence with Byron Scott having confidence in him, not that he didn't think he could play.
[–]West JM15 2742 points 23 hours ago
Lin and his bad luck. From potentially playing for D'antoni again to getting Byron "let's bench Lin for Ronnie Price" Scott.
[–]Lakers hulksmash1234 1050 points 22 hours ago
Ronnie price must've had some serious dirt on management or Scott. Dude got so much playing time and no one knows why.
[–]content_content77 814 points 22 hours ago
Because Bryon Scott is a shit coach.
[–]Sneaky RatFriend 43 points 22 hours ago
That Lakers stint was a fucking nightmare.
[–]Lakers hulksmash1234 48 points 22 hours ago
The Byron Scott era was a nightmare.
[–]Lakers so-cal_kid[S] 18 points 21 hours ago
Don't you disrespect the tank commander like that.
[–]Lakers deathofosiris 37 points 21 hours ago
Bro you can't tank properly when you actually have guys in that can play basketball.
[–]Lakers toomanypumpfakes 49 points 22 hours ago
Byron Scott didn’t like how Lin would run pick and rolls with Tarik Black and get buckets. He wanted Lin to run the offense and give up the ball
[–]Suns stridered 38 points 21 hours ago
He wanted Lin to turn the ball over and let the opponent score.
Lin's pick and roll offense with Tarik Black was money and it was stopping the tank which was why Lin always got benched after a few good plays in a row.
[–]ninjaxbyoung 473 points 22 hours ago
Not just Byron Scott but also having to deal with Kobe. You got Kobe yelling at you to do one play and Bryon telling you to do something different.
Lin is a actually a better player than he gets credit for. He's been placed in a lot if systems that didn't fit him or the coach didn't utilize him.
When he was in Charlotte, they had him coming off the bench but he was the main focal point for the second unit. Was avergiving 15 pts and 6 assists. I really liked the chemistry he had with Kemba and Kemba actually trusted J Lin.
[–]Pelicans BandwagonMoltk 264 points 22 hours ago
That year, the hornets had a lot of 4th quarter comebacks with both Lin and Walker playing together. Such a fun team
[–]West angrytunasandwich 452 points 1 day ago
Thats probably what he said in Game 7 when they kept missing all those 3s. "If you miss 10 of them, Try to miss 20 in the next half"
[–]poopfeast180 348 points 1 day ago
to be fair 0/27 is unheard of.
[–][SAS] Manu Ginobili papa_sax 299 points 1 day ago
I still don't believe it and I watched the damn game live
[–]Pistons coolpens11 121 points 23 hours ago
Especially by a team with shooters like Harden and CP3 and then role guys who all showed they can shoot 3s at high volumes all regular season like Ariza, Gordan, PJ and Gerald "H-TOWN" Green.. like wtf
[–]Knicks ieatass123 195 points 1 day ago
Yeah, seems like he hasn't changed one bit since.
[–]Pacers afananadazzam 90 points 1 day ago
Harden has been leading the league in turnovers for years
[–][HOU] Hakeem Olajuwon goat0 132 points 23 hours ago
And 0 Houston Rocket fans give a fuck.
[–]Rockets Kdot32 58 points 22 hours ago
Him and Russ have been top 2 in turnovers for awhile...neither fan base cares because it was the best path to winning
[–]Timberwolves Morezingis 133 points 23 hours ago
"I know you set the turnover record last season James, but I want you to break it this season, too."
[–]the_next_core 4503 points 1 day ago
“I know you guys missed 27 3’s in a row, but next game go ahead and shoot 72 3’s. Do not think once about stopping.”
[–]Rockets MrDenimChicken 57 points 23 hours ago
this made me laugh and cry at the same time
congratulations on your top comment. I'm gonna go kill myself.
[–]San Diego Rockets Bosurd 1627 points 1 day ago
And now we have the most 3s made in a game.
[–]Cavaliers LeKingofAkron 433 points 23 hours ago
That was ours =(
[–][CLE] Andrew Bogut _SotiroD_ 287 points 23 hours ago
Don't worry, we still got the playoffs record.
[–][BOS] Jayson Tatum Herb_Kazzaz 490 points 23 hours ago
The east runs through you guys
[–]Clippers duplicatesnowflake 344 points 22 hours ago
They probably don't even lose one playoff game in the east this year.
[–]Wizards livefreeordont 100 points 22 hours ago
Kings undefeated in the playoffs for a decade!
[–]Cavaliers XoXHamimXoX 323 points 23 hours ago
Man, Carmelo really ruined a good thing =l
[–]Orangutan 288 points 23 hours ago
Carmela Anthony ruined this guy and his future path in the NBA as a Knick? What an exciting time and exciting player that was.
[–]FuckRandyMoss 127 points 21 hours ago
90% of things that went wrong with players can be blamed on Carmelo.
[–]DCT715 256 points 23 hours ago
As a Knicks fan, the day Melo got D’Antoni and Lin off the Knicks was the day we lost all hope of ever having success with Carmelo as our captain.
[–]Knicks as718 237 points 22 hours ago
This, more than ALL the other problems, is why I will forever loathe him as a player.
[–]luck_panda 187 points 21 hours ago
Yep. Before any Melo Stans disagree, D'antoni has admitted multiple times that Amare and Melo were the ones pushing hard to have Lin kicked
[–]Pacers Kn7ght 53 points 21 hours ago
Why would Amare? Because he passed it to Tyson Chandler more or something?
[–]Timberwolves JustSeriousEnough 22 points 23 hours ago
Still feel, if the Knicks didn't lose to the Hornets during Linsanity, they would have gotten rid of Melo. Not sure where Amare's dislike of Lin came from though if true.
[–]luck_panda 207 points 21 hours ago
Because Amare didn't want to play at the pace that Lin played at. He liked Lin (according to D'antoni) but Lin's pace would mean he'd either have to train harder or play less time. Melo just didn't like Lin because he stole spotlight from him.
[–]Pacers Kn7ght 92 points 23 hours ago
I don't know which makes me angrier.
[–]NBA dead-serious 44 points 23 hours ago
man i always thought Lin and Amare's PnR game were clicking this season. clearly i didn't watch the Linsanity games close enough lol
[–]themonkey12 89 points 22 hours ago
In an alternative timeline, Lin is still on the NYK, Camelo get traded because people know he is fat, and Lin end up not getting a season ending injury. In that world, Linsary spread far and wide leading the Knick to the NBA championship with a Healthy Tyson Chandler, JR Smith, Amar'e Stoudemire, and the newly sign Andre Iguodala.
[–]LiquidBurnss 30 points 21 hours ago
I like that timeline
[–]ResiSleeps 93 points 21 hours ago
Come back to the Bay Linsanity
[–]Warriors darkblob 27 points 19 hours ago
I would love this
[–]Nets squareheadhk 25 points 23 hours ago
I don't even like the warriors at all but I'd love J Lin to get a ring so sure
[–][GSW] Chris Mullin WindLane 19 points 22 hours ago
And he'd do well in the Warriors' system - the dude puts out tons of effort.
